Questions

Frequently asked

If your question isn't here, ask us directly — and we'll add it.

Getting started

Does my child need any dance experience to start?

No. Our beginner batches assume no prior training of any kind. Children start by learning to hear the beat and to stand well; everything else is built on that.

What should my child wear to class?

Please dress in comfortable, modest clothing that allows free movement — churidar or leggings with a kurta is our standard practice attire, required at every level. Kathak is danced barefoot, so no shoes or socks on the practice floor. Ghungroo (ankle bells) come later, once your teacher assigns them, so you won’t need a pair for your first class.

Classes

What is Kathak, and what is the Jaipur Gharana?

Kathak is one of the eight classical dance forms of India, built on rhythmic footwork, spins, and storytelling through gesture and expression (abhinaya). The Jaipur Gharana is one of its major stylistic schools, known for intricate rhythmic work and powerful footwork; Kathakaars teaches in the Jaipur Gharana tradition carried forward from Pandit Durgalal ji. Our founder, Sayali Goswami, is a Gandabandh disciple of Guru Pandita Uma Dogra ji in this lineage.

Tuition

How much does it cost?

Tuition is $120 per month per student, due on the 1st of each month and billed by credit card. This is a flat monthly rate — there is no per-class or per-session charge. See our Cancellation Policy for details on withdrawals and refunds.

Policies

What happens if we miss a class?

Missed classes due to a student’s absence aren’t eligible for makeup credit or a refund, except in cases of extended illness — please reach out to us to discuss those situations. If we cancel a class ourselves, for a holiday, venue closure, or instructor illness, we’ll schedule a makeup session or apply a credit to the following month. See our full Cancellation Policy for details.
